Fire Your Boss Step 1 – The Truth About Online Marketing

A Long Road of Learning

What? Did you think I was going to sugar coat it? Promise you’d make thousands in your first week?

That is NOT why I’m here!

If firing your boss has crossed your mind – read on! This is the real truth about online marketing!

Did you know that there is a huge percentage of people that fail at online marketing because they believe these promotions of great things in a short time? It’s true. If you are serious about creating an online business, you have to know what you’re getting yourself into before you start!

If you’re new to the whole concept, or maybe you’ve been involved in a few of the get-rich-quick ideas, you are going to need a lot of training. Now that’s nothing to be intimidated by. It just means that in order to succeed, you need to learn the ropes. It’s no different from opening a candy shop. You can fill it with lots of sweet products, but if you don’t know how to run a business, it will turn sour very quickly!

There are programs out there that will give you a free website, or have you create one just by asking you questions about your new endeavour. Wow! That was easy! But now what? Now that you have this website, what are you going to do with it? Do you know how to place products on your website that could bring you income? What about content and graphic design? And who’s going to see it? Can you perform SEO? Do you know what SEO is? What about HTML Code?

These, and so many more things, are what you need to learn before you can be successful online.

Real Expectations

As I alluded to above, expecting to “join up” and see $1000 by Friday? Not a real expectation!

So what can you expect? Well, a lot depends on you and how much time and effort you put into your business.

In general, a website will be up and running for a minimum of about six months to a year before it is generating income. At that point things should start to roll along nicely with your continued commitment and you should start seeing consistent money.

There are so many variables involved as to when and how much money there will be. Your dedication and what you are promoting are the biggest factors. The point to be made here, is to be realistic. Don’t quit your job and start a website next week with the idea that you’re now self-employed. It simply does not work that way and you are bound to fail. Know that this is a long term plan and something you will be nurturing for many years to come.

Financial Commitment

Yes there is free information out there. Is it enough to see you through to a successful business? Not likely!

Free is good. But free only gets you so far. So what are willing and able to commit financially to the success of your new business? What can you afford to pay for training What are you willing to invest in yourself? What about down the road, as your business grows and you need to step it up?

These are all questions that need to be answered before you get started. If you were to apply for financing for that candy store, you would need a Business Plan before anyone would even consider loaning you money. Even though you may not be applying for a loan, a Business Plan is always a good idea. You’d be surprised what you can learn just by creating one!

The other side of this “coin” is that you also don’t have to spend a fortune to learn what you need to know. You’ve probably seen the programs out there that have a small sign-on fee and then hit you with exorbitant fees for further training once you’re inside. Don’t fall for these either! Know what it is being offered before you pay!

  1. Hallo there,

I have to say that what you have said here about affiliate marketing is really brutally honest, which is what I like hearing before committing myself into something.

    Thanks a lot for that.

I see you say that a lot depends on what you are promoting. Which products would you say are the best for a beginner like me to promote to make money in the next 6 months?

    1. Hi Dave, and thanks. I suppose it is brutally honest but I think people deserve to know the truth. I don’t sugar coat things for my own gain.

To answer your question, it’s not really about the product. When you have learned the steps to becoming an affiliate marketer, you know that it is about you. Any product out there, can be sold to someone. Of course there are more trending products but they also come with more competition.

Your sales will come when you brand yourself as someone that your readers can trust. When your content is legitimate and detailed, readers have a sense that you are not just copy and pasting details. The search engines will recognize this as well. Focus on you and your content, the rest will come.

      Christine
