The summer months are not far off and once again you’re searching for that summer or part-time teen job. And now, they’ll be even harder to find with the increase in minimum wage. Employers will not be looking for as many summer students as they used to. So how do you become the one that snags the job?
What’s Out There?
The usual right? McDonalds, Tim Hortons, Subway. Nothing that really interest you but you need to earn money to get you through the summer. If you’re lucky and you work hard, you may even get to keep that part-time job through the school year.
Let’s face it, the teenage job opportunities out there are not that many and like I said, there will be even less this year. I am one of those that believe the huge hike in minimum wage is a mistake. Being an employer myself, I know that I will only be able to pay one person now instead of two. You may think “it’s only a few more dollars an hour” but it’s not! For an employer, there are extra EI and CPP costs as well that are calculated on that higher amount. It really does make a huge difference to the employer.
So there’s the usual food chain jobs and less of them. How are you going to find yours?
What Are Your Skills?
I know, I know! How can you have any skills when no one will give you the opportunity to work and gain skills?
Well that’s where you’re wrong. I’m willing to bet that you know one heck of a lot about computers. In fact, you may know more about the current apps then I do! Are you into graphics or writing? You have to say yes to writing!
How many texts/messages do you send a day?! Ok so hopefully you get where I’m going with this.
Chances are you do have skills. You just don’t acknowledge them as skills.
Where Are You Going?
You may or may not be at the point where you’re starting to think about what you’re going to do with your life. What career path makes sense for you and how you will get there.
Without making myself sound ancient, I can tell you that it takes a whole lot more money now to have the luxury of not living paycheque to paycheque! Back in the day (clear throat), you could be a kid and figure it out later. Now you need to be thinking about it a lot sooner. The last thing you want to do is start out struggling!
So What If I Gave You An Option?
How interested would you be if your job involved working on your laptop? How interested would you be in having your own website? Do you have an interest or a hobby that you’re really into? Would learning more about websites and online activity tweak your interest?
It is possible for you to start an online business and earn yourself some money as you’re going through school.
I found this great place to learn everything you need to know to get you started. That is how I’ve built this website that you’re on now as well as others. There are so many LEGIT ways to make money online and it dawned on me that this would be a great way for young adults to put skills that they probably do have, into doing something that interests them, AND can get them started on a career path if they so choose.
The program I found is called Wealthy Affiliate. They offer so much training and assistance it’s crazy! They also offer a lot of it for free. You can join for free and be able to build 2 websites that will be hosted, backed up and secured. You have access to different website themes and training to get you started into building your website.
There are lots of ways to make money through a website, but I would suggest as a starter site, that you be an affiliate (seller) for places like Amazon, EBay, Etsy, there are all kinds. It does not cost you a dime to sign up with them and advertise their products on your site. You earn commission every time someone on your site clicks a link and purchases. When you consider how many millions of people are searching the web and purchasing, there is a whole ton of traffic .
Now as easy as it is to get started, it’s not something you’re going to make money from overnight. It takes time and hard work. But if you’re into technology and it’s something you’d like to learn more about, it’s a great way to do it. If nothing else, you will gain knowledge that could help you get work later on. You have the opportunity to find out if it’s something you enjoy doing. See, I’m a firm believer in making a career out of something that you like doing. You’re way more apt to succeed than if you go to a job every day that you hate!
I can’t express enough how happy I am to have found this program and I truly believe that it would be a great place for students to start. I will not, however, try to mislead you. You can learn what you need to get your website going with just the starter membership and it is free for as long as you’d like. There is a Premium Membership that costs $49 US per month or $359 US per year. It does offer a lot more training.
Now obviously, if you’re a student looking to earn money, you won’t have the money to go Premium. It may be something to consider down the road or Mom and Dad may like what you’re doing and want to encourage you. Either way the option is yours.
There is so much more I can tell you about this program but I’m not going to do it here. I have already written a review of Wealthy Affiliate and I am going to give you the link to go and check it out. Don’t worry, you can click without me asking for money or your email address! I encourage you to at least check it out below.
If you have any questions or concerns, please leave them below and I will get back to you. Thanks for reading!
